Spatial representation of the thresholded β-amyloid and tau cross-eigenimages.

Spatial representation of the thresholded β-amyloid and tau cross-eigenimages. The tau scores are significantly distance-correlated with amyloid over large areas of the cortex. In contrast, the β-amyloid scores appear to be significantly associated with tau in localized regions of the entorhinal cortex and the lateral inferior temporal gyri.

This distance-correlation map was thresholded using permutation techniques, and revealed statistically significant distance-correlation values for large areas of the cortex, mainly in the temporal lobe, posterior cingulate, and medial frontal cortex. In other words, those are the spatially distributed β-amyloid regions that are maximally distance-correlated with the tau scores.

Similarly, the tau cross-eigenimage was computed by a voxelwise distance-correlation between the tau scores and the dataset of β-amyloid images. After thresholding, the significant regions for the tau cross-eigenimage were more localized to the entorhinal cortex and the lateral inferior temporal gyri, a clear resemblance with the topography of Braak Stages 1 and 2.
